Indian, Oct 27 : Cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital after sustaining a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia.
The incident occurred when Iyer dived backward to complete a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey. However, the impact caused a severe injury below his left rib cage, leading to internal bleeding and a sudden drop in vital parameters.
According to a statement issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the 30 year old was immediately rushed to the hospital after the team’s medical staff noticed his vitals fluctuating upon returning to the dressing room.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury,” the BCCI stated on X (formerly Twitter).
Doctors have confirmed that Iyer will remain under observation in Sydney for about a week until his condition stabilises. His return to India will depend on medical clearance following recovery.
The injury comes as a major setback for the Indian middle-order batter, who has been in strong form in recent matches and was expected to play a key role in the team’s upcoming fixtures.
