NEW DELHI, Oct 28: India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, who sustained a ruptured spleen and rib cage injury during the third ODI against Australia, has been shifted out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital and is now reported to be in a stable condition, easing concerns about his recovery.
According to a BCCI source quoted by PTI, “He has been shifted out of ICU and may take a few more days before being discharged from the hospital in Sydney.”
Iyer suffered the injury while attempting a running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. Though he initially managed to walk off the field with assistance from the physio, his condition worsened later as his vital parameters dropped, prompting urgent hospitalization.
Medical examinations revealed internal bleeding caused by a laceration in the spleen, following which Iyer was admitted to the ICU for observation and treatment.
BCCI’s head of medical services, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, praised the on-field medical team for their prompt and effective response, which helped avert a potentially serious situation.
Meanwhile, sources confirmed that Iyer’s family members are expected to travel to Sydney soon to be with him as he continues his recovery.
