CSIR-UGC NET December 2026 Registration Begins; Biotechnology Exam Merged With Life Sciences

NTA opens applications for the December examination, introduces a combined Life Sciences and Biotechnology discipline, and sets November 5 as the regular registration deadline.

NEW DELHI, Oct 8: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has commenced the registration process for the Joint CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) December 2026 session, introducing an important change to the examination structure with the merger of the Biotechnology Eligibility Test (DBT-BET) and the CSIR-UGC NET Life Sciences paper.

The revised arrangement introduces a new examination discipline titled Life Sciences and Biotechnology (LS & BT), bringing the two previously separate examination streams under a combined framework. The change is scheduled to take effect from the December 2026 examination cycle.

According to the examination schedule announced by the NTA, eligible candidates can submit their application forms online through the official CSIR-UGC NET portal, csirnet.nta.nic.in. The regular registration and fee payment deadline is November 5, 2026, at 11:50 pm.

The December session will be conducted in computer-based test mode on December 19, 22 and 27. The examination will cover five subject areas: Chemical Sciences; Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences; Life Sciences and Biotechnology; Mathematical Sciences; and Physical Sciences.

The merger is a significant development for students pursuing postgraduate research, doctoral studies and academic careers in biological sciences and biotechnology. Candidates intending to appear for the newly combined paper will need to familiarise themselves with the revised syllabus and examination requirements before beginning their preparation.

New examination structure for biotechnology candidates

The introduction of Life Sciences and Biotechnology represents the central change in the December examination cycle. Candidates who previously prepared for the DBT-BET examination or the CSIR-UGC NET Life Sciences paper should carefully examine the new discipline’s syllabus rather than relying exclusively on older examination materials.

The updated syllabus has been included in the CSIR information bulletin. Aspirants are advised to review the prescribed topics, understand the revised scope of the subject and organise their preparation according to the requirements specified for the combined examination.

For students whose academic background is in biotechnology, the change makes it particularly important to check the eligibility conditions and the subjects covered by the revised paper. Candidates from life sciences backgrounds should similarly verify how the updated syllabus applies to their intended examination category.

A combined discipline may require candidates to reassess their preparation strategies, particularly where their earlier study plans were based on a separate examination structure. The official information bulletin remains the primary reference for determining the syllabus and other applicable examination conditions.

Registration deadline and application procedure

The NTA has made the application process available online. Candidates are required to complete the prescribed registration formalities and pay the examination fee within the announced deadline.

Applicants should enter their personal and academic information carefully, select the appropriate subject and retain confirmation of their submitted forms and fee payments. Any discrepancy in the application details could create difficulties during subsequent examination-related procedures.

Candidates who fail to complete the regular application process by November 5 will have an additional opportunity through the late-application window scheduled from November 6 to November 9. A late fee of Rs 500 will apply during this period, with payment accepted until 11:50 pm on the final day.

The agency has also scheduled an application correction window from November 10 to November 12, closing at 11:50 pm. Candidates should use this facility, where applicable, to correct permitted errors in their submitted forms.

Applicants are advised not to wait until the final hours to register. Completing the process in advance would allow them sufficient time to address technical difficulties, check their details and confirm that their application has been successfully submitted.

Examination dates and duration

The December 2026 examination will be held across the country in computer-based mode. The announced dates are December 19, 22 and 27, with examinations scheduled in two shifts.

The first shift will run from 9 am to noon, while the second shift will take place from 3 pm to 6 pm. Each examination will have a duration of 180 minutes, or three hours.

The question paper will be available in Hindi and English, according to the examination notice. Candidates should consult the official schedule and subsequent notifications for details concerning their examination centre, shift and other arrangements.

The NTA has stated that information regarding examination city intimation slips and admit cards will be released separately. Applicants should therefore monitor the official portal instead of relying on unverified messages or unofficial social media updates.

Why the examination matters

The CSIR-UGC NET is an important national level examination for candidates seeking eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor positions and admission to PhD programmes in Indian universities and colleges, subject to the applicable eligibility and institutional requirements.

For research-oriented students, qualifying can provide an important route towards advanced academic work. The examination also serves as a benchmark for assessing subject knowledge and research readiness in the disciplines covered by the test.

The merger of the biotechnology and life sciences examinations is therefore relevant not only to candidates preparing for a competitive test but also to universities, research institutions and students planning their long-term academic careers.

Aspirants should distinguish between the confirmed examination schedule and the changes introduced through the revised subject structure. While the December dates and registration deadlines have been announced, candidates must rely on the official information bulletin for detailed provisions governing the new discipline.

Preparation strategy for candidates

Candidates preparing for the December session should begin by downloading the latest information bulletin and reviewing the revised LS & BT syllabus. They should identify topics requiring additional attention and develop a realistic study schedule that leaves sufficient time for revision and practice.

Previous question papers can help candidates understand the general format and level of questions, but older papers should be used alongside the updated syllabus. Depending entirely on material prepared for an earlier examination structure may leave gaps in preparation.

Students should also practise timed tests to improve accuracy and time management. Regular revision of fundamental concepts, solving subject-based questions and identifying recurring mistakes can help build confidence before the examination.

Applicants must separately track administrative deadlines, including registration, fee payment, permitted corrections and the release of examination documents. Academic preparation and timely completion of application formalities are both essential parts of the process.

Official guidance remains essential

The latest information published by the NTA and the CSIR-UGC NET portal should be treated as authoritative for the examination. Candidates should check for updates concerning eligibility, subject selection, examination-city information and admit cards as the December session approaches.

The combined Life Sciences and Biotechnology paper marks a change in the examination arrangements for the December 2026 cycle. For candidates planning research or teaching careers, understanding the revised syllabus and following the official schedule will be crucial to preparing effectively.
