Deep Freeze Across the US: 200 Million Face Snow, Ice and Extreme Cold Alerts

A slow moving weather system is set to sweep across the US, bringing heavy snow, ice buildup and life-threatening cold over several days.

US, Jan 24 : More than half of the United States is bracing for a powerful winter storm expected to cause widespread disruption as it advances steadily eastward, placing over 200 million people under weather alerts.

Meteorologists warn the system could rank among the most severe winter events in recent years, largely due to its sluggish movement. The prolonged duration is likely to allow snow and ice to accumulate, increasing the risk of travel chaos, infrastructure damage and extended power outages.

The storm began affecting the Southern Plains late Friday and is forecast to spread through the Mississippi and Tennessee valleys on Saturday. By Sunday and Monday, it is expected to reach the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.

Snow totals could approach 30 centimetres in some areas, particularly north of the storm’s path. States stretching from Oklahoma to Massachusetts face significant snowfall, while regions farther south  including Texas, Virginia and parts of the Carolinas  are more likely to experience a dangerous mix of rain, snow and freezing rain.

Strong winds are compounding the threat, with wind chill values forecast to plunge far below zero. In parts of the northern and central Plains, conditions could feel as cold as minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Heavy ice accumulation in some regions may lead to prolonged electricity disruptions.

Several states have already issued emergency declarations, as officials urge residents to stock essential supplies and limit travel.

Why forecasters say the threat is unusually high

The storm is arriving alongside an intense surge of Arctic air. In parts of Minnesota, early morning temperatures have already fallen well below zero, with wind chills reaching extreme levels. Forecasts suggest record-breaking lows may be possible in portions of the Southern Plains and the eastern US over the weekend.

According to weather experts, the system is being driven by a strengthening low-pressure zone originating in the Southwest. As it tracks east, it is expected to draw moisture from the Gulf while colliding with bitterly cold air from the north, creating ideal conditions for heavy snow and widespread icing.

Winter storm alerts remain active across a broad swathe of the country, from the Southern Plains through the South and into the Northeast, with hazardous conditions expected to persist for several days.
