Deepti Sharma and Niki Prasad Rescue India in Four-Wicket Win Over Zimbabwe

India recover from a dramatic top-order collapse in Raipur as Deepti's 49 and debutant Niki's unbeaten 39 give new captain Smriti Mandhana a winning start.

RAIPUR, Oct 16: India began their women’s T20 International series against Zimbabwe with a four wicket victory on Friday, overcoming a difficult start to their run chase through an important partnership between experienced all-rounder Deepti Sharma and debutant Niki Prasad.

Chasing a target of 115 at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, India reached 116 for six in 15.4 overs. Deepti scored 49 off 37 deliveries, while Niki remained unbeaten on 39 off 35 balls, helping the hosts recover after losing four wickets for just 19 runs.

The match marked Smriti Mandhana’s first appearance as India’s full-time T20I captain following her appointment to the role. The victory gave her an encouraging start, although the early collapse exposed areas that the team will need to address during the remaining matches.

Zimbabwe, despite losing, produced a spirited performance with the ball and demonstrated that they could trouble India’s established batting line-up. Their bowlers took advantage of the conditions and put the hosts under considerable pressure before Deepti and Niki restored control. Zimbabwe post 114 for five after steady recovery

After winning the toss, Mandhana elected to field, giving India the opportunity to assess the surface before beginning their own innings. The decision initially appeared effective when Kranti Gaud dismissed Beloved Biza leg-before-wicket in the opening over.

Zimbabwe needed to rebuild after that early setback. Kelis Ndhlovu and Modester Mupachikwa helped steady the innings, with Ndhlovu contributing 42 runs from 44 deliveries.

Their partnership prevented India from running through the batting order and gave Zimbabwe a platform from which to accelerate. Ndhlovu concentrated on keeping the innings together, while her teammates looked for opportunities to score without taking unnecessary risks.

Mupachikwa added 16 before Zimbabwe’s middle order attempted to increase the scoring rate. Sharne Mayers then provided the innings with greater momentum, scoring 43 from 33 balls.

Mayers’ contribution proved important because Zimbabwe needed runs in the second half of their innings after a measured start. Her aggressive approach helped the visitors move beyond the 100-run mark and finish with 114 for five from their allotted 20 overs.

India’s bowlers maintained control through important spells. Nandani Sharma finished with figures of two wickets for 11 runs, while Sree Charani took one wicket for 14 runs. Their economical performances restricted Zimbabwe from producing a larger total.

Although 114 was a modest target by T20 standards, Zimbabwe’s disciplined bowling later demonstrated that the score would not be as straightforward to chase as it appeared.

India’s top order suffers an unexpected collapse

India entered the chase with a clear advantage on paper, but Zimbabwe’s bowlers quickly changed the situation. Nyasha Gwanzura delivered a decisive spell that disrupted the hosts’ batting order and put the visitors in contention.

Mandhana was dismissed for nine, while Anushka Sharma managed only four runs. Harmanpreet Kaur also departed early, leaving India without the stability they would have expected from their experienced top order.

Shafali Verma’s dismissal further increased the pressure. By the time India had lost four wickets for 19 runs, the chase had become a serious test of composure.

Gwanzura was central to the collapse, finishing with three wickets for 18 runs in three overs. Her ability to make breakthroughs at crucial moments prevented India from establishing the partnerships required to control the innings.

Zimbabwe’s fielding and bowling discipline added to India’s difficulties. Rather than allowing the batters to settle, the visitors continued to challenge them and forced the hosts to reconsider their approach.

The early wickets also changed the responsibility of the remaining batters. India could no longer depend on an uncomplicated chase built around their leading players. They needed a partnership that combined caution with the ability to score regularly.

Deepti Sharma provides the turning point

Deepti took responsibility at a critical moment, combining experience with an adaptable batting approach. Having contributed with the ball earlier in the match, she returned to the centre to help India recover from their precarious position.

Her innings of 49 from 37 balls became the foundation of the chase. Instead of attempting to finish the match through an immediate burst of attacking shots, Deepti focused on rebuilding the innings and identifying scoring opportunities.

She was joined by Niki Prasad, who was making her senior international T20 debut. The pair built an 82-run partnership for the fifth wicket, shifting the contest away from Zimbabwe after the visitors had appeared firmly in control.

Deepti’s contribution was significant not only because of the runs she scored but also because of the timing of her innings. India needed someone to absorb pressure, prevent further wickets from falling quickly and ensure that the required target remained within reach.

Her performance reflected the value of an all rounder who can influence a match in more than one discipline. After helping India restrict Zimbabwe to a manageable score, she became the central figure in the response with the bat.

Deepti fell just short of a half-century, but her innings had already transformed India’s position. She was subsequently named Player of the Match for her contribution to the victory.

Niki Prasad makes a confident international debut

Niki’s performance was another major positive for India. The young batter demonstrated composure under pressure despite entering the game at a time when the team had lost four wickets in quick succession.

She scored an unbeaten 39 from 35 deliveries and complemented Deepti’s experience with sensible shot selection. Rather than allowing the mounting pressure to dictate her approach, Niki gradually settled into the innings and began finding boundaries when opportunities arose.

Her contribution was particularly encouraging given the circumstances of her debut. Batting alongside an experienced international player provided a useful partnership, but Niki also had to make her own decisions about when to defend and when to attack.

The 82-run stand gave India the stability they had lacked during the opening overs. It also prevented Zimbabwe from capitalising further on the early wickets.

Niki’s background includes captaining India to the title at the 2025 ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup. Her performance in Raipur offered an early indication of how that experience could translate into the senior international environment.

Although the demands of international cricket are different, her ability to remain composed during a difficult chase was an encouraging sign for India’s future options.

India lost Deepti and wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh during the closing stages, but the remaining batters ensured that the recovery was completed. Niki stayed at the crease and struck the boundary that brought India across the finishing line in the 16th over.

Mandhana’s captaincy begins with a win

The result gave Mandhana a positive start in her new role as India’s full-time T20I captain. However, the match also provided several lessons for the leadership group.

India’s bowling unit did its job by limiting Zimbabwe to 114 for five, with Nandani and Charani particularly economical. The batting collapse, on the other hand, showed how quickly the team can lose control when several top-order players are dismissed in a short period.

The response from Deepti and Niki offered reassurance that the middle order possesses the ability to manage difficult situations. Still, India will want to avoid placing such a heavy burden on a small number of players in future matches.

Mandhana’s challenge will be to combine an attacking approach with greater consistency. The team has experienced players capable of setting the pace, but partnerships and adaptability remain essential when opponents apply sustained pressure.

The opening fixture also gave India an opportunity to assess younger players and identify combinations that could work across the remainder of the series.

Zimbabwe take encouragement despite defeat

For Zimbabwe, the defeat will be disappointing, but the match provided evidence of their ability to compete against a leading international side.

Gwanzura’s three-wicket spell was a standout performance, and the visitors’ bowlers showed that disciplined execution could expose weaknesses in India’s batting. Their ability to reduce the hosts to 19 for four transformed a modest target into a competitive contest.

With the bat, Ndhlovu and Mayers made important contributions to ensure Zimbabwe reached a respectable total after losing an early wicket. The team will nevertheless look for greater acceleration during the final overs and more support for its leading run-scorers.

The main concern will be the failure to break the Deepti-Niki partnership after establishing such a strong position. Removing either batter earlier might have increased the pressure on India’s lower order.

Zimbabwe can draw confidence from their performance while recognising that sustaining pressure across an entire T20 innings remains essential against experienced opposition.

India look ahead to the remaining matches

The second T20I is scheduled for October 18 in Raipur, followed by the third match on October 20. India will aim to build on their opening victory, while Zimbabwe will seek to convert their promising bowling performance into a series win.

For the hosts, the immediate priority will be to improve the stability of the top order and ensure that the middle overs do not become a recovery exercise. Deepti’s all-round performance and Niki’s assured debut have provided encouraging foundations.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will hope their bowlers can continue exploiting early opportunities and that their batters can produce a stronger finish.

The opening match ultimately highlighted the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket. A target of 115 appeared manageable, but a rapid succession of wickets created a genuine contest. India’s recovery demonstrated the importance of partnerships, patience and decision-making under pressure.

With a 1-0 lead secured, Mandhana’s side can approach the next fixture with confidence while remaining aware that a more consistent performance will be necessary to maintain control of the series.
