DGP Nalin Prabhat Confirms 9 Dead, 27 Injured in Srinagar Police Station Blast

DGP Nalin Prabhat says explosion occurred during sampling of seized explosives 27 injured, police station severely damaged

Srinagar, Nov 15: Nine people including policemen, forensic experts, revenue officials, and a civilian were killed in a deadly overnight blast at Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat said at a press conference on Saturday.

Providing details, the DGP said the explosion occurred during the handling and sampling of a “huge quantity of explosive substances, chemicals, and reagents” recovered earlier in connection with FIR No. 162/2025 of PS Nowgam. The material had been seized from Faridabad as part of an ongoing investigation.

“Given the unstable and sensitive nature of the recovered explosives, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team had been conducting the sampling process for the past two days with utmost caution,” Prabhat said. “However, around 11:20 pm last night, an accidental explosion took place. Any other speculation into the cause of this incident is unnecessary.”

The DGP confirmed that nine lives were lost one SIA personnel, three FSL experts, two crime photographers, two revenue officials from the magistrate’s team and one tailor associated with the operation.

In addition, 27 police personnel, two revenue officials, and three civilians from nearby houses sustained injuries. “The injured were immediately shifted to hospitals where they are receiving treatment,” he added.

The explosion caused massive structural damage to the Nowgam Police Station, with adjoining buildings also affected. Assessment teams are currently determining the extent of the destruction.

“J&K Police stand in solidarity with the families of the deceased in this hour of grief,” DGP Prabhat said.
