New Delhi, July 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hailed the success of the Digital India initiative as it completed 11 years, describing it as a transformative programme that has reshaped governance, empowered citizens, and elevated India’s standing in the global digital landscape. He said the initiative has become a cornerstone of the country’s development journey by improving access to technology and making public services more transparent, efficient, and citizen-centric.
Marking the anniversary of the flagship programme, the Prime Minister said Digital India has fundamentally changed the way government services are delivered while creating new opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth. According to him, the initiative has touched nearly every sector and every section of society, from metropolitan cities to rural villages.
In a message shared on social media, Modi said that the Digital India mission has provided the country with a distinct global identity by leveraging technology to improve governance and enhance the quality of life for millions of citizens. He noted that digital transformation has become one of India’s defining strengths over the past decade.
The Prime Minister highlighted the rapid expansion of digital public infrastructure, saying technological advancements have simplified access to government schemes and public services. He pointed to the widespread adoption of digital payment platforms, transparent Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanisms, and online public services as major achievements that have strengthened accountability while reducing delays and leakages in welfare delivery.
According to Modi, technology has emerged as a powerful tool for improving the ease of living by enabling faster financial transactions, easier access to essential services, and seamless interaction between citizens and government departments. He said digital platforms have significantly reduced dependence on traditional paperwork and lengthy administrative procedures.
Emphasising the inclusive nature of the initiative, the Prime Minister said Digital India has expanded well beyond major urban centres. The programme has brought digital connectivity to villages as well as tier-2 and tier-3 cities, ensuring that technological benefits are accessible to a much larger population.
He noted that the spread of affordable internet services and improved digital infrastructure has encouraged innovation across the country. Young entrepreneurs, startups, and technology innovators are now developing solutions to address challenges in healthcare, agriculture, education, finance, and governance, contributing to India’s rapidly growing digital economy.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the programme’s role in strengthening public service delivery across multiple sectors. Digital platforms have enhanced access to educational resources, improved healthcare services through digital solutions, supported farmers with technology-driven initiatives, facilitated online commerce, and made government services more efficient and transparent.
Looking towards the future, Modi said India’s growing digital capabilities are enabling rapid progress in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductor manufacturing, quantum computing, and advanced digital infrastructure. He expressed confidence that investments in these strategic sectors would create new employment opportunities, encourage innovation, and strengthen India’s position in the global technology ecosystem.
He reiterated that the government’s long-term vision is to ensure technology remains people-centric and contributes to sustainable development. According to him, digital innovation should continue to empower citizens while driving inclusive economic growth and improving public welfare.
Describing Digital India as the foundation of a developed and self-reliant nation, Modi said the initiative has played an important role in empowering economically weaker sections of society by improving access to financial services, government benefits, and digital resources. He added that technology has become an important instrument for promoting social inclusion and reducing inequalities.
The Prime Minister also referred to the expansion of optical fibre networks across the country, saying enhanced connectivity has laid the groundwork for broader digital participation. He observed that India’s digital transformation has attracted global attention, demonstrating how technology can be deployed at scale to serve a population of more than one billion people.
Government officials also reflected on the progress achieved since the launch of the programme in 2015. Before the Digital India initiative, many public services required citizens to visit government offices, complete extensive paperwork, and wait for prolonged periods to access benefits. The programme has significantly modernised service delivery by bringing numerous services online and increasing digital accessibility.
Officials stated that one of the key objectives of Digital India has been to bridge the digital divide by expanding internet connectivity, improving digital literacy, and making technology affordable for citizens across different socio-economic groups. This approach has enabled wider participation in the digital economy and accelerated the adoption of digital governance.
The initiative has also contributed to the development of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, which has become an internationally recognised model for digital governance. India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has emerged as one of the world’s largest real-time payment systems, accounting for nearly half of global real-time digital payment transactions. The rapid growth of digital payments has transformed financial inclusion by enabling secure, convenient, and instant transactions for businesses and consumers alike.
Industry experts believe that the continued expansion of digital infrastructure, combined with growing investments in emerging technologies, will further strengthen India’s innovation ecosystem in the coming years. They note that initiatives supporting artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, and digital entrepreneurship are expected to enhance India’s competitiveness in the global technology sector.
As Digital India enters its second decade, the government aims to deepen digital inclusion, strengthen cyber infrastructure, expand high-speed internet connectivity, and encourage innovation-driven economic growth. The programme is expected to remain central to India’s efforts to build a digitally empowered society and knowledge-based economy while supporting the country’s vision of becoming a developed nation.
