Disney Cancels Hong Kong Screening of Zootopia 2 After Tragic Fire Incident

Planned screenings and celebrations postponed as city mourns massive high rise blaze

Hong Kong , Nov 28 : Disney has called off the Hong Kong premiere of Zootopia 2 after a devastating fire engulfed the Wang Fuk Court public housing estate in Tai Po, leaving at least 83 dead, more than 100 injured, and over 200 residents missing. The tragedy, one of the worst in recent decades, turned what was meant to be a joyful fan celebration into a period of mourning for the city.

The fire, which began Wednesday afternoon, raged into Thursday, with firefighters struggling against extreme heat and falling debris to reach residents trapped inside. The 32 storey complex, home to over 4,000 people, was under renovation at the time and wrapped in bamboo scaffolding and flammable construction materials. Early investigations suggest these materials may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.

In response, Disney announced on Instagram that all planned events including the Magic Access special screening, the grand gala premiere, and singer Joey Yung’s appearance at the park’s ‘Friendtastic!’ parade have been canceled. The company also postponed the evening fireworks show, Momentous: Party in the Night Sky, “out of respect” for the victims and their families.

Disney has not yet provided a new date for the rescheduled premiere. For now, the company is focusing on showing solidarity with Hong Kong as the city grapples with the aftermath of the fire.
