Srinagar, 19-04-2024 : Azad, the President of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), asserted that the decision to abstain from contesting elections in Kashmir was not influenced by external forces but was a deliberate choice made by his party. He emphasized his commitment to serving the people of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that his constituents expressed concerns about his potential departure for Delhi if he contested parliamentary elections. Responding to their sentiments, he opted to prioritize serving locally.
Addressing the media after the nomination of DPAP candidate Saleem Parrey for the Anantnag-Rajouri Parliament constituency, Azad clarified that the decision not to participate in the parliamentary elections was made collectively by the party leadership. Asserting his autonomy, Azad emphasized that his decisions are self-directed and not dictated by external pressures.
Initially slated to contest from the Anantnag-Rajouri seat, Azad’s party later named Saleem Parray as their candidate. Azad expressed confidence in Parray’s capabilities and anticipated a favorable outcome in the elections.
Commenting on the ongoing polling in the Udhampur Parliament Constituency, Azad indicated DPAP’s strong position. However, he criticized the timing of the elections in April, citing concerns about reduced voter turnout due to rainfall during this month. Despite his reservations, Azad urged his party members to maintain focus on their campaign and refrain from engaging in negative criticism of opponents, emphasizing respect for all political leaders, regardless of seniority or affiliation.
