Dramatic Twist in ASI Suicide Case: FIR Names IPS Officer Puran Kumar’s Wife and Brother-in-Law Haryana Govt Faces Double Pressure

Rohtak police register FIR for abetment to suicide and criminal conspiracy, while family demands justice and government responds amid heightened tension.

Chandigarh/Rohtak, Oct 16: In a significant development in the ASI Sandeep Kumar Lather suicide case, Rohtak police on Wednesday registered an FIR of abetment to suicide and criminal conspiracy, naming key individuals mentioned in Sandeep’s final video. The FIR (No. 305) was filed at Sadar police station just hours after Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini visited the deceased’s family in Ladhot village and assured swift justice.

According to sources, the FIR names four individuals, including IPS officer Y Puran Kumar’s wife Amneet P Kumar, her brother Amit Rattan (an AAP MLA from Punjab), and former PSO Sushil Kumar, who is currently in jail for a separate corruption case. The FIR, lodged under BNS Sections 108 and 61 on a complaint by Sandeep’s wife Santosh, has not been made public.

FIR Read to Family; Postmortem Conducted
The FIR was formally read to Sandeep’s family in the presence of government negotiators. Only after this did the family agree to the postmortem, which was conducted at PGIMS Rohtak late Wednesday night. Sandeep’s body had been kept in a hired freezer by the family, who refused cremation until action was taken against all those named in his suicide note and video.

Meanwhile, Puran Kumar’s body was cremated in Chandigarh after eight days of delay due to the ongoing legal and administrative standoff.

Government Grapples on Two Fronts
The Haryana government faced dual challenges: Sandeep’s family demanded FIRs against the named officials and financial support, while also insisting that justice be served. In response, Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya was transferred on Oct 10, and DGP Shatrujeet Kapur was sent on leave on Monday night.

Sandeep, part of the team investigating alleged corruption by Puran Kumar, reportedly shot himself following humiliation related to the FIR filed against Puran Kumar’s former PSO, Sushil Kumar. In his final video, Sandeep defended Kapur as honest and stated that his suicide was due to humiliation from corruption charges, not caste-related issues.

During the visit to Ladhot village, CM Saini assured the grieving family that justice would be served. Apart from the FIR, the government also agreed to provide financial assistance and a job for a relative, addressing some of the family’s immediate concerns.
