New Delhi, Oct 9: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a stern warning to political parties, candidates, and star campaigners against the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
In a statement released on Thursday, the poll body cautioned that strict monitoring of social media platforms is underway to ensure that AI-generated deepfakes or digitally altered content do not distort facts or spread misinformation during the campaign period.
The Commission reminded political parties of its earlier directives to clearly label AI-generated or synthetic content shared online or in advertisements. Such materials must be explicitly marked as “AI-Generated,” “Digitally Enhanced,” or “Synthetic Content” to maintain transparency and prevent voter deception.
“The Commission advised all parties to refrain from using AI-based tools to create deepfakes that could mislead voters or vitiate the election atmosphere, emphasizing the need to preserve the integrity of the electoral process,” the ECI said.
The poll body had earlier issued similar guidelines ahead of the Lok Sabha elections to curb the misuse of AI and combat the spread of misinformation during campaigns.
Bihar will vote in two phases on November 6 and 11, with counting scheduled for November 14.
