Eid-ul-Adha to Be Celebrated on June 7 in Jammu and Kashmir, a Day After Saudi Arabia

SRINAGAR, May 27: The auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, June 7, following the completion of the Islamic month of Dhul Qadah, as the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul Hajj was not sighted in the region on Monday evening. This was officially announced by the Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Nasir-ul-Islam.

In a statement issued from Srinagar, the Grand Mufti confirmed, “The moon of Dhul Hajj has not been sighted anywhere in Jammu and Kashmir today. Consequently, the month of Dhul Qadah will be observed for 30 full days, and Eid-ul-Adha will fall on June 7.”

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakrid or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant festivals in Islam. It commemorates the unwavering faith, obedience, and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was willing to sacrifice his son in submission to God’s command. The festival is marked by special congregational prayers, the ritual sacrifice of animals (Qurbani), and widespread acts of charity, particularly toward the underprivileged.

While the festival will be observed on June 7 in Jammu and Kashmir, it will be celebrated a day earlier—on June 6—in Saudi Arabia and many other parts of the Muslim world, as the crescent moon was sighted there on May 27. This discrepancy in dates is not unusual and occurs due to regional differences in moon sighting, which determines the Islamic calendar.

The Grand Mufti urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to prepare for the festival in the spirit of devotion and generosity. He also emphasized the importance of observing the Qurbani ritual in accordance with Islamic guidelines, ensuring that the meat reaches those in need.

Eid-ul-Adha is not only a time for religious observance but also a social occasion marked by family gatherings, festive meals, and prayers for peace and prosperity. Security and civic authorities in Jammu and Kashmir are expected to make necessary arrangements to facilitate peaceful celebrations across the Union Territory.
