European Leaders Push New Migration Pact Amid Rising Border Pressure

Mediterranean arrivals increase sharply

Europe, May 12 : European Union leaders intensified discussions on a revised migration framework after a fresh rise in migrant arrivals across Mediterranean routes.

Southern European countries reported growing pressure on reception facilities as thousands of migrants and asylum seekers attempted crossings from North Africa. The issue has once again exposed divisions within the EU over burden-sharing and border responsibilities.

Several governments demanded stronger external border controls and faster deportation procedures for rejected asylum applicants, while humanitarian groups urged leaders to prioritise human rights protections and rescue operations.

The proposed migration pact includes new mechanisms for relocating asylum seekers among member states, financial contributions for countries facing the highest pressure and expanded cooperation with transit nations.

Political observers noted that migration policy is becoming a central issue ahead of several upcoming European elections, with nationalist parties using border concerns to gain support.
