Mumbai, Feb 12 : Veteran Bollywood playback singer Udit Narayan has come under scrutiny after his first wife, Ranjana, lodged a complaint at the Women’s Police Station in Supaul, Bihar, alleging long term mistreatment and a non-consensual medical procedure.
Accompanied by her lawyer, Ranjana, 61, formally approached the police on Tuesday, claiming she was subjected to the removal of her uterus without her knowledge, allegedly influenced by the singer and his family members.
According to her statement, the couple married on December 7, 1984, in a traditional Hindu ceremony. She alleges that their relationship deteriorated after Narayan moved to Mumbai to pursue his music career, leading to years of emotional distress.
Ranjana further claimed she later learned through media reports that Narayan had married another woman, Deepa Narayan. She alleged that whenever she sought clarification, her concerns were either denied or dismissed, leaving her in prolonged uncertainty.
The complaint also details an incident from 1996, when she says Narayan and his brothers took her to a Delhi hospital under the pretext of routine treatment. It was during this visit, she alleges, that doctors performed a hysterectomy without her informed consent. She maintains that the reality emerged only years later during subsequent medical consultations.
Beyond the medical allegation, Ranjana has accused the singer of neglect and emotional abuse. She claims she was prevented from entering his Mumbai residence during a 2006 visit and faced similar humiliation at her in-laws’ home in Nepal.
She also stated that previous attempts to secure relief through the Family Court in Supaul and the Women’s Commission brought little progress. Despite an alleged compromise acknowledging her as his wife, she contends that Narayan failed to honour commitments or provide support.
Police officials confirmed that the complaint has been registered and the matter is under investigation. Station officer Anju Tiwari noted that the allegations date back nearly three decades and said further action, including the filing of an FIR, will depend on the findings of the probe.
Ranjana said the case is already before the court but expressed concern over the slow pace of proceedings, asserting that she continues to await justice.
