Jammu, 06-01-2024 : As the icy grip of winter tightens its hold, Jammu experienced the coldest night of the season with the mercury plummeting to 4.1 degrees Celsius. The entire region, including the Valley, shivered under the influence of an intense dry cold wave, further intensifying the wintry conditions.
According to the latest report from the Meteorological department, Srinagar registered a bone-chilling minus 5.4 degrees Celsius, Gulmarg dipped to minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, and Pahalgam reached minus 6.3 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature on the same day.
Jammu city, however, marked the season’s coldest night at 4.1 degrees Celsius, signifying the relentless grip of the winter season. Other areas in the region also experienced chilly temperatures, with Katra recording 5.6 degrees Celsius, Batote at 2.3 degrees Celsius, Bhaderwah at minus 0.3 degrees Celsius, and Banihal at minus 0.6 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.
In the Ladakh region, Leh town recorded an exceptionally frigid minus 12.8 degrees Celsius as the lowest temperature during the night, adding to the biting cold conditions.
The ongoing 40-day period known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ which commenced on December 21 and extends until January 30, marks the peak of the harsh winter in the region. However, so far, this period has remained dry, devoid of any significant snowfall. This lack of snowfall raises concerns, as the usual heavy snowfall during Chillai Kalan is crucial for replenishing perennial water reservoirs in the higher reaches of Kashmir.
The water bodies, including lakes, rivers, streams, and springs, heavily rely on the snow reserves in the mountains to sustain water levels during the subsequent summer months. The absence of adequate snowfall during Chillai Kalan could have detrimental effects on the water resources, highlighting the importance of sufficient snowfall during this critical winter period.
