03-05-2023 : The implementation of the FASTag system for toll collection in India has been a remarkable success, according to ministry officials. Since its implementation in February 2021, the system has consistently shown growth in its adoption and use. On April 29th, 2023, the daily toll collection through the FASTag system reached an all-time high, with a collection of ₹193.15 crore and 1.16 crore transactions recorded in a single day.
The number of toll plazas under the FASTag program has increased from 770 to 1,228, including 339 state toll plazas. With over 6.9 crore FASTag issued to users, the system has achieved an impressive penetration rate of around 97%. It has significantly improved the user experience by reducing waiting times at NH Fee Plazas, making toll payment hassle-free and efficient.
The successful implementation of FASTag has not only enhanced the efficiency of toll operations but has also led to a more precise valuation of road assets. The improved accuracy of toll collection has helped to attract further investment in India’s highway infrastructure, leading to a positive impact on the country’s economy.
In addition to its effectiveness in toll collection, the FASTag system has also facilitated seamless and secure contactless payment for parking fees at over 140 parking lots in 50+ cities across India. This feature has further improved the overall user experience, making it more convenient and efficient.
The Government of India remains committed to providing a seamless and hassle-free tolling experience for all road users. In this context, NHAI is actively working towards finalizing the necessary requirements for implementation of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based tolling system. The new system will allow free-flow tolling, making the entire toll payment process seamless and hassle-free for road users across India.
