New Delhi: Kerala Police have initiated a criminal investigation into an AI-generated video allegedly targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission of India, registering a case against both the social media platform X Corp and a user account involved in its circulation.
Officials from the cyber wing stated that the video, flagged by election authorities, appeared intended to mislead viewers and undermine trust in key democratic institutions during a crucial electoral phase.
An FIR has been lodged in Thiruvananthapuram against a social media handle and other unidentified individuals, with investigators now examining the origin of the clip and whether its dissemination was part of a coordinated effort.
Police said the 77-second video carried the potential to incite unrest, prompting swift legal action. Authorities have also alleged that the platform did not respond adequately to requests for its removal.
The case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to provocation, forgery and public mischief, along with identity theft provisions under the IT Act.
In an advisory, officials urged citizens to refrain from sharing unverified or manipulated content, warning that any attempt to disrupt the electoral process would be dealt with strictly.
