NEW DELHI, Sept 10: Fortis Healthcare has announced plans to install India’s first upright proton therapy system, marking a significant development in the country’s cancer care infrastructure.
The system, the MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System, is designed to deliver highly precise radiation treatment while allowing patients to receive therapy in an upright position.
Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation treatment that uses protons to target tumours while limiting radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. The technology can be particularly useful for treating cancers located close to sensitive organs and other critical structures.
The upright configuration is expected to provide clinicians with additional flexibility in positioning patients during treatment. This can be important in cases where conventional treatment positions may be difficult or where tumour location requires specialised planning.
The installation is part of efforts to expand access to advanced cancer-treatment technologies in India. Proton therapy is increasingly being considered for selected patients because of its potential to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure to healthy tissues.
Fortis said the new facility would contribute to precision oncology and strengthen its ability to offer specialised treatment options to cancer patients.
The development comes as hospitals and healthcare providers across India continue investing in advanced technologies, including precision radiation, artificial intelligence and specialised diagnostic systems.
