Four Waste Transfer Stations Set for Upgrade Under Smart City Mission

₹76-crore Smart City project aims to improve segregation, cut landfill load and curb open dumping

Jaipur, Jan 24 :  Smart City Limited has approved the modernisation of four waste transfer stations to strengthen the city’s solid waste management infrastructure, with an estimated investment of nearly ₹76 crore. The project is scheduled to commence in March and is expected to be completed within six months.

The waste transfer stations at Kalwar Road, Sitapura, Brahmpuri and the Mansarovar RIICO area have been selected for upgradation under the Smart City initiative. Once upgraded, these facilities will include covered warehouse-like structures for temporary storage and processing of waste, aimed at easing the burden on landfill sites.

At present, Jaipur has only one fully operational mechanised waste transfer station at Jhalana, which handles around 100 tonnes of waste daily. Another facility with a capacity of 20 tonnes per day at Lal Dungri on Delhi Road is likely to become functional soon.

Under the new plan, garbage collected from across the city will be routed to these transfer stations, where it will be mechanically segregated into wet, dry and recyclable waste. The segregated material will then be transported to designated processing plants for scientific disposal or recycling.

While the initiative has been welcomed, residents have expressed concerns over persistent shortages of garbage hoppers in several localities, which often lead to open dumping near markets and residential areas. Addressing these concerns, Jaipur Municipal Corporation officials said additional tenders would be floated wherever required.

Officials also maintained that the upgraded transfer stations would significantly reduce foul odour, sludge formation and roadside dumping, as waste would be moved out of the city within an hour of collection, ensuring cleaner and more efficient waste handling.
