Fresh Snow Hits Jammu & Kashmir, Dry Weather Expected for Next 48 Hours

Western Disturbance exits region; authorities warn NH-44 and other key routes remain closed, flights disrupted at Srinagar Airport.

SRINAGAR, Jan 24: Parts of the Kashmir Valley recorded fresh snowfall on Friday night and early Saturday, while rain affected regions of Jammu as the Western Disturbance moved out of the Union Territory, weather officials said on Saturday.

Additional snow accumulation was reported in Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Baramulla, Budgam, Bandipora, Kishtwar, and the Rajouri town, where snowfall is considered rare. Meteorologists attributed the unusual weather to a strong cold air mass associated with the departing Western Disturbance, which also caused temperatures to plunge in typically warmer areas.

Experts said Jammu and Kashmir are likely to experience mostly dry conditions over the next 48 hours. However, another Western Disturbance is expected to approach from Monday afternoon, January 26, bringing the possibility of light to moderate rain and snowfall across parts of the region.

Meanwhile, traffic officials reported that the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), Mughal Road, SSG Road, and Sinthan Road remain closed due to adverse weather. Authorities have advised commuters to avoid travel until roads are officially reopened and to rely on verified traffic updates.

Srinagar Airport also faced disruption, with at least seven flights cancelled due to adverse weather and a NOTAM in effect at Delhi Airport. Passengers were advised to check with airlines for the latest flight information.

Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely as snowfall and low temperatures impact connectivity and daily life across the Union Territory.
