Fresh Snowfall Grips Kashmir Valley, More Predicted from January 4-6

Srinagar, Jan 2: The Kashmir Valley witnessed fresh snowfall on Thursday, intensifying the ongoing cold wave that has gripped Jammu and Kashmir. The Meteorological Department (MET) has forecast additional rain and snow as two consecutive Western Disturbances (WDs) are expected to affect the region in the coming days.

According to a MET department statement, “A feeble WD will bring generally cloudy weather with light snowfall at scattered places on January 2, and light snow at isolated higher reaches on January 3.” The situation is expected to intensify between January 4 and 6, with a moderate to strong WD likely to cause light to moderate rain in Jammu’s plains and significant snowfall across most parts of J&K. The peak activity is forecasted for the night of January 4 through late January 5, with conditions improving by late January 6.

The MET department has issued advisories for tourists, travelers, and transporters to plan accordingly, as sub-freezing temperatures and icy road conditions in both plains and higher reaches could cause disruptions. Heavy snow is expected at isolated higher altitudes during this period.

The cold wave continues to make its presence felt, with Srinagar recording a minimum temperature of -2.6°C, Gulmarg -8.6°C, and Pahalgam -4°C on Thursday. Jammu city registered a relatively milder 7.4°C, while Katra, Batote, Banihal, and Bhaderwah recorded 9°C, 4.6°C, 2.9°C, and 1.6°C, respectively.

The ongoing 40-day-long ‘Chillai Kalan,’ the harshest phase of winter that began on December 21, has led to partial freezing of lakes and water bodies across the Valley. The extreme cold has prompted health experts to issue warnings, particularly for children and the elderly.

Doctors have emphasized minimizing prolonged exposure to the cold, which constricts blood vessels and significantly raises the risk of heart attacks and heart failures. “The risk is particularly severe for patients with respiratory ailments, as cold weather exacerbates these conditions,” they said.

After the anticipated heavy snowfall, the weather is expected to stabilize, with generally dry and cloudy conditions predicted from January 7 to 10. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic and administrative advisories to ensure safety during this period of harsh winter weather.
