‘G2 Masters of Abuse’: Congress Criticizes Amit Shah’s LS Remarks

Opposition protests Home Minister’s comments; Rahul Gandhi’s attendance record and Speaker Birla’s absence spark heated debate

New Delhi, Mar 11: The Lok Sabha witnessed intense confrontation on Wednesday after Amit Shah made remarks that were sharply condemned by the Congress, which described him and Narendra Modi as “G2 Masters of Abuse and Defamation.” The comments came amid a debate on a resolution seeking to remove Om Birla, which was ultimately defeated in the Lower House.

The Congress party routinely uses the term ‘G2’ to criticize the Gujarat leaders. Opposition members raised slogans and rushed to the Well of the House in protest as Shah concluded his speech at the end of the two-day debate. Several MPs demanded an apology, terming the remarks “offensive.”

In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh stated, “G2 are Masters of Abuse and Defamation,” noting that similar objectionable words by Shah had been expunged from the Lok Sabha record previously.

Congress leaders K.C. Venugopal and Priyanka Gandhi also criticized the BJP for the absence of the prime minister during crucial sessions, questioning the government’s commitment to parliamentary democracy. Venugopal pointed out the lack of PM Modi’s presence during debates, the vote of thanks to the president, and key bills including the GST and Triple Talaq Bills.

During the debate, Rahul Gandhi interjected, claiming he had been repeatedly stopped from speaking in the House and emphasizing that Parliament represents the entire nation, not just one party.

Responding to the allegations, Shah defended himself, asserting that the House is governed by parliamentary rules, not party dictates. He rebutted claims of suppressing the opposition, pointing to Rahul Gandhi’s frequent foreign trips as a reason for his lower attendance. Shah also cited attendance records to counter suggestions of bias against Speaker Birla, who remained absent throughout the debate.

The session concluded with Speaker Jagdambika Pal urging members to take their seats, following which the resolution was rejected by a voice vote, and the House was adjourned for the day.

This confrontation highlights ongoing tensions between the government and opposition over procedural fairness, the role of the Speaker, and the conduct of parliamentary debates.
