Gaurav Gogoi Part of Global Nexus to Destabilise India: Assam CM Himanta Sarma

Chief Minister seeks central probe into suspected Pakistan connections Congress MP dismisses charges as political diversion.

Assam, Feb 09 : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has intensified his attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging that the parliamentarian and his wife were connected to individuals associated with Pakistan in activities purportedly aimed at undermining India’s progress.

In a statement posted on X, Sarma described the case as part of a larger, Pakistan backed network operating through proxy actors. He said the state government has recommended transferring the Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry to a central agency, citing the need for deeper scrutiny.

The Chief Minister claimed that Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh was central to a wider conspiracy, accusing him of positioning an associate to analyse India’s development trajectory and identify ways to obstruct it, including through environmental campaigns. Sarma further alleged that Gogoi had a role—directly or indirectly—in facilitating these efforts.

Among the accusations listed were purported access to sensitive parliamentary material, unreported travel to Pakistan, and interactions with Pakistani officials under the cover of youth exchange initiatives. Sarma commended the Assam Police for bringing what he termed a “dangerous nexus” to light despite institutional constraints.

He added that the volume of evidence and unresolved questions warranted intervention by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, to which the matter has been referred. Sarma also said that once the scale of the alleged activities became clearer, it was his responsibility to make the SIT findings public.

Gogoi rejected the allegations, accusing the Chief Minister of reviving old claims to deflect attention from emerging concerns over a large tract of land reportedly measuring around 12,000 bighas. He argued that the charges were politically motivated and surfaced at a time when public debate in Assam was shifting toward demands for change.
