Google Introduces Built in AI Features for Chrome in India, Adds Support for 8 Indic Languages

Gemini powered tools aim to make browsing smarter with content summaries, tab assistance and integrated email support

New Delhi, Mar 11: Google on Wednesday announced the rollout of new built-in artificial intelligence capabilities in its Chrome browser for users in India, aiming to make web browsing more intuitive, secure and efficient.

The company said the update will introduce several AI-driven tools, including the integration of Gemini in Chrome, enabling users to interact with a browsing assistant directly within the browser.

As part of the rollout, Chrome will support more than 50 languages, including eight major Indic languages — Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil  to improve accessibility for users across the country.

According to Google, the new features are powered by the company’s latest Gemini 3.1 model and are designed to help users find, understand and manage information online more efficiently. The capabilities will initially be available on desktop and iOS devices.

Charmaine Dsilva, Director of Product Management for Chrome at Google, said the browser plays a central role in how people work, learn and stay connected. She noted that integrating AI directly into Chrome will allow users to have more proactive and intelligent browsing experiences.

Dsilva added that India is among the first markets after the United States to receive the new features, reflecting the country’s growing role in adopting and shaping emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

With the Gemini assistant embedded in Chrome, users can interact with an AI-powered helper without leaving the page they are browsing. By clicking an icon in the browser, they can start a conversation with the assistant while continuing their existing task.

The AI tools can summarise long web pages, generate quizzes from study material, and help users organise their browsing activity by recalling previously visited pages. This functionality aims to make multitasking easier and reduce the need to switch between tabs.

Google also said the integration extends to Gmail, allowing users to draft and send emails directly from the Chrome interface. Through the side panel, users can ask the assistant to compose a message, review it and send it with a single click without navigating away from their current webpage.
