NEW DELHI, June 27: The Central Government has accelerated the expansion of the national highway network by approving a fresh set of infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity, facilitating trade and supporting long-term economic growth. The new projects form part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise India’s transport infrastructure and create faster, safer road corridors across the country.
Officials said the newly sanctioned highway projects will improve connectivity between industrial clusters, agricultural markets, ports, airports and major urban centres. Better road infrastructure is expected to reduce logistics costs, shorten travel time and encourage greater investment in manufacturing and commerce.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that priority is being given to widening existing highways, constructing bypasses around congested towns and developing greenfield expressways to meet increasing traffic demand. Modern engineering standards, improved safety features and climate-resilient construction techniques are being incorporated into new projects.
Authorities noted that highway development has become a key pillar of India’s infrastructure strategy, contributing significantly to employment generation and economic activity. Special attention is also being given to improving road connectivity in border regions, tribal areas and remote districts to promote balanced regional development. The government is encouraging the adoption of advanced technologies, including intelligent traffic management systems, digital toll collection, automated monitoring and drone-based project inspections to improve efficiency and transparency during construction.
Road safety remains an important focus of the expansion programme. New highways will feature improved signage, crash barriers, emergency response facilities, pedestrian crossings and service roads wherever necessary. Authorities are also strengthening awareness campaigns to promote responsible driving and reduce accidents.
Environmental sustainability has been integrated into project planning through extensive roadside plantation drives, rainwater harvesting structures and the use of recycled construction materials wherever feasible. Officials stated that efforts are being made to minimise ecological impacts while maintaining rapid infrastructure development.
Industry experts believe the continued expansion of the highway network will strengthen domestic supply chains, improve freight movement and increase India’s competitiveness in global trade. Efficient transportation infrastructure is expected to support sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and e-commerce.
