New Delhi, July 26: The Central Government has expanded its telemedicine programme to improve access to quality healthcare in rural and remote regions, enabling patients to consult specialists without travelling long distances.
The latest phase of the initiative connects district hospitals, primary health centres, and wellness centres with doctors from leading medical institutions through secure digital platforms.
Health Ministry officials said the expansion is intended to bridge healthcare gaps in underserved areas where specialist doctors remain scarce. Patients will now receive consultations in departments including cardiology, paediatrics, dermatology, psychiatry, and endocrinology through virtual appointments.
Authorities noted that digital healthcare services have witnessed steady growth over the past few years, especially among elderly patients and individuals living in geographically challenging regions.
Under the expanded programme, healthcare workers at village level facilities assist patients during virtual consultations by recording medical histories, conducting preliminary examinations, and facilitating diagnostic tests when required.
Experts believe telemedicine not only reduces travel expenses for patients but also allows earlier diagnosis and timely treatment of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.
The government is simultaneously investing in digital health infrastructure by improving internet connectivity, electronic health records, and online appointment systems across public healthcare institutions.
Medical practitioners have welcomed the initiative, stating that virtual consultations complement conventional healthcare services rather than replacing in-person treatment. They emphasised that patients requiring physical examinations or emergency care will continue to be referred to hospitals.
Officials said expanding digital healthcare remains a priority under India’s broader healthcare modernisation strategy, with additional districts expected to be integrated into the telemedicine network during the coming months.
