Government Implements Export Ban on Onions Until March 2024 to Safeguard Domestic Supply and Stabilize Prices

08-12-2023 : To boost domestic availability and control prices, the Indian government has implemented a ban on the export of onions until March of the upcoming year. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade issued a notification stating that the export policy for onions has been amended from “free” to “prohibited” until March 31, 2024.

This decision comes in response to the need for strategic measures to stabilize the onion market within India. By restricting exports, the government aims to ensure an ample supply of onions within the country, mitigating concerns about potential shortages and price fluctuations. The ban is expected to contribute to maintaining a stable and affordable onion market for consumers domestically.
