Government Panel Recommends NEP-Based Adolescent Education in Schools and Colleges

Proposed framework focuses on consent, child safety, gender awareness and life skills under the National Education Policy

New Delhi, July 17: A government appointed expert panel has recommended the introduction of a comprehensive adolescent education framework in schools and higher educational institutions, aligning the curriculum with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The proposed framework aims to equip students with knowledge on child safety, consent, gender sensitivity, mental well being, and responsible decision making.

The recommendations are intended to modernise school education by integrating life skills and awareness programmes alongside academic learning. Officials believe the initiative will help students navigate social challenges while promoting a safer and more inclusive learning environment.

Focus on Child Protection and Responsible Behaviour

According to the panel, adolescent education should include structured lessons on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, consent, prevention of child marriage, online safety, and healthy relationships. The recommendations also stress the importance of age-appropriate teaching methods that encourage open discussions while respecting cultural sensitivities.
