Government Pushes Generic Medicine Use to Cut Treatment Costs

Policy drive focuses on affordability and wider access to essential drugs

New Delhi, Apr 6: The government has reiterated its push to promote the use of generic medicines as part of efforts to make healthcare more affordable for citizens.

Officials highlighted that increasing awareness about cost effective alternatives can significantly reduce out of pocket expenditure on treatment. Pharmacies under government backed schemes are being encouraged to stock a wider range of quality generic drugs.

Healthcare experts have welcomed the move, noting that generics offer the same therapeutic benefits as branded medicines at a fraction of the cost. The initiative is also expected to improve access to essential medications in both urban and rural areas.

Authorities said continued monitoring and quality assurance mechanisms will be key to building public trust and ensuring the success of the programme.
