Govt Rules Out Waiver of Pending Power Dues for Small, Marginal Farmers in J&K

Power Development Department says agriculture sector already receives heavily subsidised tariff support

Jammu, Feb 17: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Tuesday clarified in the Legislative Assembly that there is currently no proposal to waive outstanding electricity bills or pending dues of small and marginal farmers in the Union Territory.

Responding to a query raised by Prof. Gharu Ram, the Minister in-charge of the Power Development Department (PDD) stated in a written reply that the government does not intend to grant any exemption on accumulated power usage charges.

The House was informed that power distribution companies (DISCOMs) are already supplying electricity to the agriculture sector at significantly subsidised tariff rates, offering substantial financial support to farmers.

The minister indicated that, given the existing subsidy structure, there is no plan under consideration to introduce an additional waiver on arrears.
