Govt to Introduce AI-Powered eKYC and Global Credential Verification in DigiLocker

DigiLocker to Enhance Paperless Governance, Secure Digital Services, and Global Trust in Citizen Credentials

Mumbai, Nov 8 : The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) on Saturday unveiled plans to integrate AI-based eKYC and global credential verification into the DigiLocker platform, further strengthening India’s digital governance ecosystem.

Once primarily a secure document storage service, DigiLocker has now evolved into a trusted digital layer connecting citizens with ministries, departments, and institutions, enabling seamless and accountable digital interactions.

During the National Conference on DigiLocker, organised by the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), officials highlighted the platform’s transformative role in driving paperless governance, inclusive education, and secure digital services.

“DigiLocker serves as the trust layer connecting citizens, ministries, and departments enabling secure, interoperable, and accountable digital governance. Our vision is a future where every digital interaction is trusted, every citizen empowered, and every institution accountable,” said S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY. He emphasised that the platform moves India’s digital journey from connectivity to capability, service delivery to self-reliance, and digitalisation towards trust.

Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary, MeitY, detailed the roadmap for AI-powered eKYC and global credential verification, positioning DigiLocker as a potential global model for paperless governance.

The conference also showcased successful integrations of DigiLocker with Pension and Treasury systems in Maharashtra and over 500 services through the Sewa Setu Portal in Assam. Seven states including Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Mizoram have been recognised as “DigiLocker Accelerators” for their outstanding contributions.

With these new features, DigiLocker will allow citizens to securely access, verify, and share personal IDs, financial credentials, and certificates, reinforcing trust, transparency, and efficiency in digital governance.
