Washington: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal held discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministerial in Milwaukee, with both sides continuing efforts to advance the India-US bilateral trade agreement.
The meeting came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone on Wednesday to review cooperation in areas including trade, defence, energy and critical technologies.
Goyal’s engagement with Greer is part of ongoing negotiations aimed at securing a balanced and mutually beneficial trade arrangement between the two countries. The Commerce Ministry had earlier said the minister would discuss progress on the proposed pact and work towards finalising an interim agreement based on the joint statement issued by India and the US on February 7, 2026.
India and the US had announced in February that they had finalised the framework for the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement. Subsequent changes in US tariff policies, however, resulted in further discussions between the two sides.
Goyal had said on September 24 that negotiations on the trade pact were effectively complete and that implementation would follow once India received a competitive advantage comparable to that available to other countries exporting to the US.
India competes with several economies in the American market, including countries in the ASEAN region, China and Bangladesh.
