Greene Resigns From Congress After Public Rift With President Trump

Former Trump ally steps down from Georgia seat amid escalating feud, triggering special election and reshaping GOP dynamics.

US, Nov 22 : Marjorie Taylor Greene, once one of Donald Trump’s closest political allies, announced on Friday that she is resigning from her Georgia seat in the US Congress following an escalating clash with the President  a move that will trigger a special election and deepen divisions within the Republican Party.
Reading from a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Greene said she could not subject her family or constituents to a “hurtful and hateful primary” driven by Trump.
“I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family too much, and do not want my sweet district to endure a primary against me by the President we all fought for,” she said, adding that Republicans were likely to lose the 2026 midterms.
Her resignation means the 14th District seat will remain vacant until a special election is held, as US congressional rules do not permit temporary appointments.
Once a fierce defender of Trump and his agenda, Greene’s relationship with him soured months ago after she supported a bill compelling the US Justice Department to release investigative files on the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein  whom Trump had previously known. She said the fallout had become “absurd and completely unserious.”
“I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’, hoping it all goes away,” she said, accusing Trump of “hatefully” spending millions of dollars to politically undermine her.
Trump recently declared that Greene had “lost her way” and publicly severed ties. Political analysts believe Greene  who has a strong following among the MAGA base may be positioning herself for a 2028 presidential bid.
Stepping away from Congress, Greene now has the opportunity to chart an independent path and reshape her political ambitions as Republicans brace for a turbulent 2026 midterm cycle.
