Gandhinagar, Oct 5: Gujarat will provide a monthly stipend of Rs 21,840 to MBBS graduates who completed their medical education abroad and are currently undertaking mandatory internships at government and GMERS medical colleges in the state, Health Minister Praful Pansheriya announced on Monday.
The stipend will be equivalent to the amount paid to other medical interns in Gujarat. The decision was discussed during a meeting with senior officials at the Suvarna Sankul-2 state administrative building in Gandhinagar.
According to Pansheriya, the measure will benefit around 350 doctors who received internship postings between June 1 and October 1, 2026. The state government will extend the financial support to eligible foreign educated MBBS graduates completing their internship requirements at government and GMERS institutions.
Pansheriya said the decision was taken under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel as part of efforts to support young doctors and strengthen opportunities for medical graduates returning to Gujarat after studying overseas.
Under National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations, students who obtain an MBBS degree from institutions outside India are required to complete a one year internship in the country. The internship is a mandatory component for those seeking to fulfil the requirements for medical practice in India.
The state government said the stipend will provide financial assistance to eligible doctors during this compulsory training period. Officials also discussed arrangements for implementing the decision across the concerned medical colleges.
The move is expected to offer financial relief to foreign trained medical graduates while they complete their required clinical internship in Gujarat. The government said the initiative would also encourage young doctors who have returned to the state after pursuing medical education abroad.
