Gurpatwant Singh Pannun Faces FIR for Warning of Potential Disorder Before Republic Day

Delhi Police registers case under multiple BNS sections after SFJ leader’s social media video sparks security alert.

New Delhi, Jan 23: The Delhi Police Special Cell has lodged an FIR against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, designated terrorist and leader of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), for allegedly threatening to disturb peace in the national capital ahead of Republic Day celebrations on January 26, officials said on Friday.

The FIR has been registered under sections 196 (promoting enmity between groups), 197 (prejudicial assertions against national integration), 152 (acts endangering sovereignty and unity), and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police said the action follows a video message circulated by Pannun on social media, in which he claimed that “sleeper cells” had pasted pro-Khalistan posters in parts of Delhi, including Rohini and Dabri, as part of a larger plan to incite unrest. The video was widely shared and described as provocative, raising concerns about public order ahead of the national celebrations.

Senior officers confirmed that search operations were conducted in the areas mentioned in the video, but no pro-Khalistan posters or related material were recovered. “Despite extensive verification with local police units, the claims regarding posters in Rohini and Dabri have not been substantiated so far,” an officer said.

The Special Cell said investigations are ongoing to evaluate the intent, reach, and possible consequences of the video, and additional legal action may follow depending on findings. Security agencies have heightened vigilance across Delhi, and authorities stressed that any attempt to disrupt peace will be dealt with firmly under the law.
