Harmanpreet Kaur in Peak Form as India Gears Up for 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup

Former India captain Anjum Chopra backs Harmanpreet’s leadership and highlights key strengths in India’s squad ahead of the home World Cup.

As the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup approaches, all eyes are on Harmanpreet Kaur, leading India for the first time in a 50-over World Cup on home soil. With five World Cup appearances under her belt, Harmanpreet’s leadership could define both her legacy and India’s quest for their maiden title.

In an exclusive conversation with IANS, former India captain Anjum Chopra expressed confidence in Harmanpreet’s form and readiness. “Harmanpreet probably is in the best space at this point in time. She’s experienced, knows the drill, and can lead from the front. This is likely her last 50-over World Cup, and she has the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on home soil,” Chopra said.

Chopra also discussed India’s top-order dynamics, noting that while Shafali Verma missed selection, the combination of Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana provides a balanced approach at the top. “It’s about adapting to the situation. If India can post 300-plus batting first, the bowlers have a solid platform,” she added.

The return of Renuka Singh Thakur to full fitness has also been highlighted as a major boost for India’s bowling lineup. Chopra emphasized the importance of having strong seam options to handle the full 50 overs and relieve pressure on other bowlers. “With Renuka back, India has a better balance in both seam and spin departments,” she said.

Regarding all-rounder Amanjot Kaur, Chopra insisted she should feature in the playing eleven, highlighting her batting, bowling, and fielding contributions. Meanwhile, Yastika Bhatia’s injury led to Uma Chetry’s inclusion, though she is expected to play a supporting role as a wicket-keeper and lower-order batter.

With a strong squad and Harmanpreet leading from the front, India aims to make a mark in front of home fans and contend seriously for the World Cup crown.
