Hazlewood Set to Miss Early T20 World Cup Matches, Australia Name Abbott as Travel Reserve

Senior pacer to stay back in Australia for rehabilitation as defending champions juggle multiple fitness concerns ahead of tournament opener

US, Jan 02 : Australia’s build up to the T20 World Cup 2026 has suffered another setback, with fast bowler Josh Hazlewood set to miss the opening phase of the tournament due to an ongoing Achilles issue. As cover, selectors have added Sean Abbott to the squad as a travelling reserve.

Hazlewood, who was earlier ruled out of the England series with a hamstring problem, developed Achilles soreness during his rehabilitation. Following medical advice, Cricket Australia decided the senior quick would remain in Sydney to continue recovery, with no confirmed date for his departure to Sri Lanka.

Australia selector Tony Dodemaide said the call was taken keeping Hazlewood’s long-term fitness in mind.
He explained that continuing rehab in familiar conditions was the best option for the pacer, adding that Abbott was brought in as insurance with several bowlers still returning to full fitness.

Abbott, who recently toured Pakistan with the squad, was described as an experienced and adaptable option with prior World Cup exposure, making him a logical choice for fast-bowling cover.

The injury concerns extend beyond Hazlewood. Pat Cummins has already been ruled out of the tournament due to a back issue, prompting Ben Dwarshuis’ inclusion in the final 15. Nathan Ellis and Tim David are managing hamstring problems, while Glenn Maxwell was rested from the Pakistan tour as part of his ankle injury management. Adam Zampa also dealt with minor groin tightness during the ODI series, though it was termed precautionary.

On a positive note, Maxwell, Ellis and David are expected to join the squad in Colombo shortly. Australia will face the Netherlands in a warm-up match before beginning their title defence against Ireland on February 11.

Despite the growing injury list, team management remains confident of assembling a competitive XI as players gradually return to fitness ahead of the business end of the tournament.
