NEW DELHI, Aug 13: Healthcare providers and industry experts have called for stronger safeguards for sensitive medical information as India’s digital healthcare ecosystem continues to expand.
The Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI) has emphasised that protecting patient information should be treated as an essential component of healthcare delivery, alongside diagnosis and treatment.
The concern assumes greater significance as hospitals and healthcare institutions increasingly depend on digital systems for maintaining medical records, sharing clinical information and delivering technology-enabled services.
India’s digital health ecosystem has expanded rapidly, with hundreds of millions of users estimated to be accessing digital healthcare services. The increasing volume of electronic medical information has also made data security an important part of patient safety and institutional accountability.
Healthcare organisations handle highly sensitive information, including medical histories, diagnostic reports, prescriptions and treatment records. Any unauthorised access or misuse of such information can expose patients to privacy and security risks.
The industry body has therefore stressed the need for healthcare institutions to strengthen data governance, cybersecurity practices and responsible handling of medical records.
The call comes as India moves towards greater integration of digital health services. The expansion of electronic records and connected healthcare systems can improve continuity of care, but it also requires robust safeguards to maintain public confidence.
Experts believe healthcare providers must ensure that technological advancement does not come at the expense of confidentiality. Stronger protection mechanisms can help patients use digital services with greater confidence while supporting the responsible growth of India’s health-tech infrastructure.
