Heavy to Intense Rainfall Batters Kashmir, Baramulla Logs Season’s Highest Downpour

Thunderstorms, light snowfall disrupt normal life; wet spell likely to persist till April 10

SRINAGAR, Mar 31: A spell of moderate to intense rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, impacted several parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the past 24 hours, the Meteorological Department reported on Tuesday.

Higher altitudes in the Kashmir Valley also experienced light snowfall, prompting the temporary closure of the Srinagar–Leh highway due to unsafe travel conditions.

As per official data, Baramulla emerged as the wettest location in the Valley, registering 73 mm of rainfall. It was followed by Poonch with 68.5 mm and Rajouri with 52 mm during the same period.

Within the Valley, Srinagar recorded 31.6 mm of rain, while other areas also witnessed significant precipitation, including Qazigund at 48.6 mm, Kupwara at 40.8 mm, Pahalgam at 36.8 mm, and Kokernag at 35.5 mm.

Night temperatures across the Kashmir region remained slightly above seasonal averages by 0 to 1°C, whereas the Jammu division saw minimum temperatures dipping 1 to 3°C below normal levels.

Gulmarg reported the lowest minimum temperature in the Valley at minus 0.7°C. In contrast, Bhaderwah in the Jammu region recorded the lowest minimum at 8.2°C.

The MeT department has forecast continued unstable weather conditions across the Union Territory until April 10, with intermittent rain and snowfall expected in phases.

Between March 31 and April 2, isolated areas may receive brief spells of light rain or snow, particularly during late afternoon hours. Cloudy conditions are likely to dominate on April 3 and 4, with scattered rainfall and snowfall, along with thunder and gusty winds.

From April 5 to 7, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy, with light rain at isolated locations. Another round of light to moderate precipitation is anticipated across many areas, especially higher reaches, from April 8 to 10.

An advisory has also been issued cautioning residents about thunderstorms and gusty winds at select locations during late afternoons on March 31, April 3, and April 4.
