High Court Broadens Sexual Harassment Panel’s Scope to Include Transgender Persons

Move aligns with Supreme Court directive, enabling the committee to hear complaints beyond cases involving women.

Jammu, Feb 12: The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh has expanded the jurisdiction of its Sexual Harassment Probe Committee to cover complaints involving transgender persons, marking a step toward more inclusive institutional safeguards.

The directive was issued through an order by the Registrar General in Jammu, stating that the decision follows instructions from the Supreme Court in the writ petition Geeta Rani vs Union of India and others. Acting on these directions, the Chief Justice authorised the existing committee to examine cases of sexual harassment and related grievances concerning transgender individuals in addition to women.

The development broadens the scope of the court’s internal redressal mechanism and reflects compliance with the apex court’s emphasis on ensuring equitable protection against workplace harassment for all gender identities.
