Hindi Sahitya Mandal Releases Jang S. Verman’s Translated Short Story Collection in Jammu

JAMMU, March 1: The Hindi Sahitya Mandal (HSM), Jammu, today organized a literary event at the Writers’ Club, Jammu, to mark the formal release of the Hindi translation of a collection of short stories titled Do Kam Terah Kahaniyan. The book, originally written by renowned artist, writer, and journalist Jang S. Verman, has been translated into Hindi by Saroj Bala, a prominent Hindi and Dogri writer from Jammu and Kashmir.

The event was presided over by Dr. Raj Kumar, an eminent Hindi writer, who attended as the chief guest. Dr. Purshotam, Associate Professor in the Department of Hindi, University of Jammu, graced the occasion as the special guest. Also present on the dais were Dr. Chanchal Dogra, President of HSM, along with the author Jang S. Verman and translator Saroj Bala.

In her address, Dr. Chanchal Dogra highlighted the literary contributions of HSM and introduced a newly instituted award dedicated to promoting Hindi literature. Monto Dutta Sharma, Acting Secretary of HSM, provided an overview of the various programs being conducted as part of the organization’s literary initiatives.

As part of the event, a critical review of Do Kam Terah Kahaniyan, which is the Hindi-translated version of Do Ghatt Terah Kahaniyan, was presented by Uma Sharma, Literary Secretary of HSM. The original book, authored by Dr. Nirmal Vinod, a distinguished multilingual writer from Jammu, has been widely appreciated in literary circles. Sanjiv Bhasin, Vice President of HSM, captivated the audience by reading out one of the stories from the book in an engaging and professional tone.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Raj Kumar lauded the literary contributions of Jang S. Verman, commending his multifaceted role in art, literature, and cultural journalism. He also appreciated the diligent efforts of Saroj Bala in translating the original work while maintaining its essence and depth.

Dr. Purshotam, in his address, applauded the introduction of the Shanti-Shaligram PG Hindi Mega Puraskar, an initiative to encourage excellence in Hindi studies. On this occasion, Sonali Thakur was felicitated with the first-ever Shanti-Shaligram Post Graduate Hindi Mega Puraskar – 2024 for securing the top position in the Postgraduate Hindi program at the University of Jammu.

The event also featured a personal reflection by Jang S. Verman, who shared insights into his creative journey, while Saroj Bala and other writers discussed the significance of the short stories included in the book and the lasting impact of Verman’s literary contributions.

The program proceedings were conducted by Uma Sharma, Literary Secretary of HSM, and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Rakesh Abrol, Executive Member of HSM.
