Housing Initiative for Kashmiri Migrants; Government Builds 880 Flats in the Past 3 Years

02-08-2023 : Over the past three years, the government has made significant efforts to address the housing needs of Kashmiri migrant employees in the Kashmir valley. Union Minister Nityanand Rai informed the Rajya Sabha that a total of 880 flats have been constructed during this period, specifically for Kashmiri migrant employees who wish to return to their homeland.

Additionally, in the Jammu region, namely Purkhu, Muthi, Nagrota, and Jagti, 5,248 two-room tenements were constructed in two phases until 2011. These tenements were built to accommodate individuals who had to leave their ancestral places of residence in Kashmir due to the prevalent terrorism in 1989-1990.

However, the Minister clarified that no new tenements have been constructed for this purpose in the last three years. Instead, in light of the improved security situation in the Kashmir valley, the government has initiated a new project to construct 6,000 transit accommodations for Kashmiri migrant employees returning to their homeland. As part of this project, 880 flats have been successfully completed within the past three years.

The move to provide housing options for returning Kashmiri migrant employees aims to facilitate their resettlement and integration into their native region. The construction of flats and transit accommodations represents a positive step towards rebuilding and revitalizing the lives of those who have longed to come back to their homes in the valley.

This initiative is crucial in fostering a sense of belonging and stability for the Kashmiri migrants, ensuring they have access to suitable and secure housing upon their return. By addressing the housing needs of these individuals, the government is taking significant strides towards fostering a conducive environment for their reintegration into society and contributing to the overall development and prosperity of the region.
