Europe, Apr 13 : Hungary witnessed a major political shift as Peter Magyar secured a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections, ending the long standing rule of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The results signal a clear move towards a pro-European political direction.
Reacting to the outcome, Ursula von der Leyen stated that Hungary has reaffirmed its place within Europe, adding that the development strengthens the European Union. She emphasised that the country’s renewed alignment reflects a return to European values and cooperation.
According to near final results, Magyar’s centre-right Tisza party won a commanding majority in the 199-seat parliament, securing over half of the total vote share. In contrast, Orbán’s Fidesz party saw a significant decline, marking one of the most notable electoral setbacks in Hungary’s recent history.
Following the results, Orbán acknowledged defeat, paving the way for a transition of power. The outcome ends over a decade and a half of continuous leadership under his government.
Addressing supporters in Budapest, Magyar outlined his vision to reposition Hungary firmly within the European mainstream. He stressed the importance of rebuilding strong ties with Western allies and ensuring the country plays an active role within European institutions.
Magyar also revealed that his initial diplomatic engagements would include visits to key European cities, followed by talks in Brussels aimed at unlocking suspended European Union funds and strengthening economic cooperation.
