New Delhi, Oct 16: International Cricket Council (ICC) Chair Jay Shah on Thursday hailed India’s recommendation to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, describing it as a “momentous occasion for Indian sports” and a reflection of the nation’s rising global sporting stature.
The Commonwealth Sport Executive Board on Wednesday confirmed its recommendation of Ahmedabad as the proposed host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games, marking a potential return of the prestigious event to Indian soil after more than a decade.
“Many congratulations to India on the Commonwealth Association’s approval of India’s bid to host the #CommonwealthGames 2030 in Ahmedabad! This is a momentous occasion for Indian sports and a testament to the country’s growing global presence! #CWG2030 #India2030,” Shah posted on X.
The recommendation follows a rigorous evaluation by the Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee, which assessed candidate cities based on infrastructure, governance, athlete experience, technical delivery, and alignment with Commonwealth Sport values.
Both Ahmedabad, India, and Abuja, Nigeria, had submitted compelling bids under the ‘Games Reset’ framework, designed to promote innovative and collaborative hosting models. The 2030 Games will mark the centenary of the inaugural edition held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930 — making it a landmark moment for the Commonwealth Sport Movement.
India, one of the most successful nations in Commonwealth Games history, finished fourth on the medal table at Birmingham 2022. Ahmedabad’s bid underscores India’s commitment to upholding the spirit of the Commonwealth while showcasing its world-class sporting infrastructure and organizational capabilities.
Commonwealth Games Association India President P. T. Usha welcomed the development, saying, “It would be an extraordinary honour for India to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. The Games would not only showcase India’s sporting and event capabilities but also play a meaningful role in our national journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047.”
She added that hosting the 2030 Games would serve as an inspiration for India’s youth, strengthen global sporting ties, and reinforce the nation’s vision of unity and excellence across the Commonwealth.
