Srinagar, 19-09-2024: Mohammad Shafi Pandit, a trailblazing figure as the first Muslim IAS officer from Kashmir, passed away at the age of 80. He had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Delhi after being diagnosed with cancer a month ago, his family confirmed. Pandit made history in 1969 when he became the first Muslim from Kashmir to clear the prestigious civil services examination.
Throughout his career, Pandit held several key positions, with his final role being the chairman of the autonomous Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission. Despite never officially becoming the Chief Secretary, he was widely regarded within bureaucratic circles as the Chief Secretary Jammu and Kashmir never had, a testament to his leadership and service.
Beyond his governmental roles, Pandit was an active participant in civil society and philanthropic efforts in the Kashmir Valley. His contributions to the rollout of the Mandal Commission report in 1992, as joint secretary to the Government of India, were also significant.
Fondly remembered for his humility and gentle demeanor, Pandit’s death marks the loss of a leader who embodied the rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir. His remains will be flown to Srinagar, where he is expected to be laid to rest.
Many prominent figures expressed their condolences, including Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who praised Pandit’s distinguished service, his dedication to public causes after retirement, and his role as an inspiring figure for Kashmiri youth aspiring to join civil services. “He epitomized the glorious composite heritage of J&K,” Ramesh said in his tribute.
