Aizawl, Feb 13, 2025: Amit Sharma, the Secretary to the Government of Mizoram for Information & Communications Technology (ICT) and Cooperation, today emphasized the need for BSNL to provide stable and high-quality network services across the state. In a focused meeting held at his office in the Mizoram Secretariat, Sharma addressed R.K. Soni, the General Manager of BSNL, along with his team, highlighting the crucial importance of improved connectivity for the people of Mizoram, especially in remote areas bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh.
As the ICT Secretary, Amit Sharma has been a proactive force in the ongoing efforts to enhance mobile connectivity throughout Mizoram. His regular discussions with various telecom companies have yielded assurances of better services, particularly in the more isolated regions of the state. The challenge remains to improve the coverage and quality of services in these hard-to-reach areas, ensuring that people, especially in border areas, stay connected.
During the meeting, Sharma advised R.K. Soni and the BSNL team—who are based in Shillong and oversee operations in Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Tripura—to establish a dedicated team of senior officers in Aizawl. This team would be tasked with overseeing the day-to-day operations and maintaining a closer, more hands-on approach to network management in Mizoram. This move aims to foster better oversight and ensure that BSNL can meet the growing demands for stable connectivity across the state.
Sharma also reviewed the overall functioning of BSNL’s network in Mizoram, stressing the importance of expanding tower infrastructure and improving signal quality. Key areas such as Lengpui Airport (Aizawl), national and state highways, and major markets have been identified as critical points where BSNL needs to bolster its service to ensure a seamless user experience. Addressing call drops and poor network issues at these high-traffic locations is a priority, as Sharma emphasized that these improvements are necessary to meet the demands of the state’s growing mobile user base.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, Sharma assured the visiting BSNL team that his department would extend all possible support to expedite the completion of pending projects. He urged BSNL to fast-track connectivity initiatives under the 4G Saturation and USOF (Universal Service Obligation Fund) schemes, which aim to bring mobile connectivity to many unconnected villages in Mizoram. He emphasized that this connectivity is particularly vital for students, farmers, and the business community, as it would open up new opportunities for education, agriculture, and commerce across the state.
To further strengthen telecom services in Mizoram, Sharma announced plans to convene a joint meeting with all major telecom players, including BSNL, Reliance Jio, and Bharti Airtel. This meeting will focus on new initiatives for the state and lay out a detailed action plan for the upcoming financial year. By collaborating with these major companies, Sharma aims to address connectivity gaps, explore innovative solutions, and ensure that Mizoram’s telecommunications infrastructure is positioned for long-term growth.
As Sharma continues to push for these changes, his leadership is poised to usher in a future where telecom services in Mizoram are no longer a barrier but a bridge to progress. The expected improvements in connectivity are set to transform the way people live, work, and interact, with long-lasting benefits for the state’s economy and its people.
