MUMBAI, Aug 25: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has introduced an eight year upper limit for completing PhD programmes, according to an update reported on Tuesday.
The move follows a review of doctoral education at the institute and is aimed at establishing a clearer timeline for research scholars to complete their academic requirements.
Under the revised framework, doctoral candidates will be expected to finish their programmes within the prescribed maximum period. The decision is part of wider efforts by the premier institute to strengthen academic progress and improve the efficiency of its research programmes.
PhD programmes generally require scholars to complete coursework, conduct original research, submit a thesis and undergo the required evaluation process. Extended enrolment periods can sometimes delay the completion of research projects and affect academic planning.
The introduction of a defined ceiling is therefore expected to encourage scholars and supervisors to maintain steady progress throughout the programme.
