IMD Issues Advisory as Dry Spell Deepens in Himachal, Frost Likely to Hit Crops

Minimum temperatures may plunge to –8°C in higher hills; ground frost and soil moisture loss pose major risks to winter crops, vegetables, and orchards.

Himachal, Dec 03 : The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla, has warned that Himachal Pradesh is likely to experience a prolonged dry spell, combined with a sharp drop in minimum temperatures over the next week. The conditions significantly increase the likelihood of frost formation across the state’s mid and higher hill regions, according to the latest Agromet Bulletin.

With no rainfall since November 29 and clear skies persisting, cold conditions are expected to intensify. The IMD’s extended forecast for December 5–11 predicts mainly dry weather across most districts.

Temperatures may dip to –8°C in higher hills

Minimum temperatures are expected to fall to –8°C to 2°C in higher hills, 4°C to 8°C in mid-hills, and 2°C to 10°C in lower hills and plains. Several pockets of Lahaul–Spiti, Kinnaur, Kullu, Kangra and Mandi may record temperatures significantly below normal, making ground frost more likely.

The advisory warns that persistent dry weather and increased evaporation may sharply deplete soil moisture, impacting wheat, garlic, onion and winter vegetables currently in sowing or early growth stages.

Apple orchards face frost injury risk

Orchard belts—especially apple-growing zones—have been advised to remain vigilant. Early frost and extreme cold could cause stem injuries and damage newly pruned areas. Farmers have been asked to retain soil moisture through mulching, avoid excessive irrigation that may cause run-off, and apply light irrigation during evening hours to reduce frost impact.

In apple orchards, growers have been advised to use copper oxychloride for canker management after harvest and maintain proper orchard hygiene by removing fallen leaves and infected fruits.

Precautions for livestock owners

Livestock owners should keep animal sheds dry, insulated and well ventilated, and protect young or weak animals with jute coverings at night. Regular de-worming and ensuring the availability of clean drinking water have also been recommended.

IMD urges farmers to follow local advisories

With cold wave like conditions expected to strengthen, the IMD has urged farmers to closely follow district wise advisories through the Meghdoot app and stay alert to sudden temperature drops that may trigger frost.
