NEW DELHI, Sept 13: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated heavy rainfall across Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab until September 17, with weather activity likely to intensify from September 16.
According to the All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued at 8:15 am on Sunday, scattered rainfall is expected over the region between September 13 and 15. The coverage of showers is likely to increase, becoming fairly widespread on September 16 and 17.
The meteorological agency has issued a warning for isolated heavy rain in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab on September 13, with similar conditions expected to persist through September 15. Isolated heavy showers are also likely on September 16 and 17.
Several parts of Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi recorded rainfall between 8:30 am on September 12 and 5:30 am on September 13, the bulletin said.
The weather conditions are being influenced by a western disturbance that continues as a cyclonic circulation over the Jammu division and adjoining areas, according to the IMD.
Meanwhile, a low-pressure area that was earlier positioned over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining Vidarbha had shifted to north Vidarbha and neighbouring Madhya Pradesh by 5:30 am on Sunday. The system is expected to move west-northwestward during the next 24 hours.
The monsoon trough at mean sea level was extending from Jaisalmer through Kota and Indore, passing across the low-pressure area over north Vidarbha and adjoining Madhya Pradesh, before continuing through Puri and further east-southeast towards the east-central Bay of Bengal.
The combination of the western disturbance, low-pressure system and monsoon trough is expected to maintain active rainfall conditions over parts of northern and central India during the coming days.
