Income Tax Department Conducts Survey at BBC Offices in Delhi and Mumbai

This comes weeks after the British broadcaster released a two-part series on PM Modi and the 2002 Godhra riots in Gujarat

14-02-2023: As part of a tax evasion inquiry, the Income Tax Department reportedly launched a survey operation at the BBC’s offices in Delhi and Mumbai on Tuesday.

The “survey” was launched a few weeks after the British broadcaster aired a contentious two-part series on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Gujarat riots of 2002. According to media accounts, workers were told to go home, and their phones were taken. According to reports, searches were also being conducted at the Mumbai headquarters. The government had issued instructions for blocking numerous YouTube videos and Twitter posts that contained links to the controversial documentary on January 21.

According to them, the government is reviewing records pertaining to the company’s business operations as well as those pertaining to its Indian subsidiary.

The Income Tax Department only inspects a company’s business premises as part of a survey; it does not enter promoters’ or directors’ homes or other places of business.
